Since half term in 4H

Miss Hillebrandt says sorry for not updating the blogsite since half term. We have been so busy in 4H that we haven’t had time to sit together and write any posts. Today, children wrote some comments about what we have been learning recently. Here are some of Miss Hillebrandt’s favourite comments:

“In science, we have been learning about skeletons. In maths, we have been learning so much about fractions.” Naeem and Arif

“This week, we have been learning about skeletons and bones in science. We have also been learning about vertebrates and invertebrates.”

“In literacy, we have written poems about fireworks and bonfire night. We have learnt a lot of new words like Wow Words and Super Sentence. In maths, we have been learning about fractions. There is a lot we can do about fractions.”

“We did golden time and it was fun.” Rubel

“In literacy, we have been writing poems and now we are writing stories set in imaginary worlds. In maths, we have been doing fractions and time.” Sahar & Hafisa

“In maths this week, we have been learning fractions. We have been using the words half, quarter and fifth. In literacy, we have been writing stories and planning them on story mountains.” Rahim

“In maths, we have been learning about halves and quarters and lots more about fractions.” Mhariam

“In science, we have been looking at bones.”

“In golden time, we get to go on the trim trail or go on the computer or play inside and colour.” Marriyah

“Stright after half term, we were doing poems in literacy and now we are starting to write a story. In science, we have been learning about friction, skeletons and bones.” Amna and Mehvish

“We have been learning about skeletons. I will tell you one thing about the skeleton: we have over 200 bones in our body.” Senna and Aisha

“I am really impressed with what the children in 4H have achieved since half term, especially in literacy where everyone worte wonderful poems and has now planned amazing stories which I can’t wait to read. Lots of children have done so much better at learning about complicated fractions than I expected too.

4H were brilliant at swimming today too. Everyone had a go in the deep end and lots of people swam without any floats or armbands. My favourite part of this week, though, was golden time when the children who were outside with me were doing fantastic drumming! We also filled the marble jar this week so we are due a class treat for good behaviour - well done 4H. Please remember about homework this week and make sure you are in school on time every day next week.” Miss Hillebrandt

Before half term in 4H

In maths this week, we have been measuring in centimeters (cm) and millimeters (mm). We have been using rulers to measure lengths and widths. We had a go at drawing pictures to represent word problems.

In literacy, we have been learning how to write stories. We started by choosing our setting and then made up a main character. We planned our stories on a story mountain. Today, we wrote our stories. Our stories are set in Victorian times. We tried to make them descriptive and interesting.

We finished our William Morris inspired printing this week and showed it in our class assembly. Thank you to all the parents who came to watch our assembly and well done to all of 4H for doing such a great presentation.

On Monday, we went to the cinema for our class treat for good behaviour. We watched Kung Fu Panda which was brilliant and very funny!

We couldn’t do ICT this week because the ICT suite is being refitted. We had a fun swimming session though, with extra play time, and made up some excellent target games in PE.

We hope that everyone has a lovely half term.

There is no homework this week (except reading) - just rest well and come back ready to learn lots on Monday 3rd November!

Recently in 4H

Now the website’s working again, here’s an update on what we’ve been learning recently. In literacy, we are in the middle of a fiction unit. We have been reading stories with historical settings. To begin with, we were history detectives and used clues to work out when stories were set. Then, we looked at the structure of stories, characters and descriptive language. Today, we chose a setting for the stories that we are going to write and described our setting.

In maths, we have learnt about shapes and data handling. (Check out the new links to find some games to practise.)

We have still been thinking lots about Victorian Times and, in art, we have been looking at the work of William Morris, a Victorian designer. We looked at his designs and sketched plants and leaves to get inspiration for our own designs. Then we tried out different ideas and choose our favourites to colour in different ways. We made prints from card and string and then had a go at printing. The prints look wonderful! Here is one of William Morris’ designs:

In PE, we made up some brilliant throwing games this week to practise our accuracy and everyone got on brilliantly at swimming. We have learnt to use a spell check in ICT and, in circle time, we have been discussing how we feel.

On Monday we are going on a class treat to the cinema to see Kung Fu Panda!

Homework:

Maths: Cars tally chart questions.

Homework

Literacy: Nouns and Adjectives sentences.

This Week

Wednesday 1st October: school is closed for Eid

Friday morning: Eid party

We worked very hard last week and learnt lots! In maths, we did lots more work about numbers. On Monday, we rounded numbers and used this to help us estimate the answers to addition questions. The rest of the week, we looked at number patterns (or sequences). We did lots of counting in 10s and learnt about odd and even numbers. Check out the new games in the maths links!

In literacy, we started learning about newspaper articles. We looked at lots of different articles and found the main features of them: headline, byline, introduction/lead sentence, photographs, captions, quotes etc. We had a go at writing our own headlines for Victorian Times. We read a recount of an explosion in a Victorian mine and then changed this into a newspaper report. We also started phonics and read non-fiction texts in guided reading.

We learnt more about life in Victorain Britian. We found out about Lord Shaftsbury and Dr Barnardo who did lots to make life better for children. We thought about the differences between schools now and in Victorian times. What can you see in this photo?

In ICT, we used Word to cut and paste and in PE we made up throwing and catching games in pairs. We talked about our gifts and talents in circle time and had fun on the trim trail for golden time.

Homework:

Literacy: correct the mistakes

Homework

Maths: counting patterns

Our First Weekly Class Post

We have already learnt a lot since we came back to school on 2nd September. We have found out lots about our new classmates and talked about what we did during the holidays.

Our main topic this half term is the Victorians. We have been finding out what life was like for children in Victorian Britain. We have two timelines in our classroom to help us remember important dates from Victorian times. We started by learning about Queen Victoria. Queen Victoria was queen for 63 years. She was married to Prince Albert and after he died, she only wore black. They had 10 children. We are now finding out what life was like for poor children in Victorian times. Click on one of our history links to find out more!Queen Victoria

In maths, we have been learning about halves and doubles. We have also been partitioning 2, 3 and 4 digit numbers. This helps us with calculations. Check out the games in our maths links.

In literacy, we have been reading and writing recounts and now we are starting to look at newspaper articles. We have been making sure our sentences agree and that the verbs are in the right tense. In ICT, we are learning to use MS Word better.

In games on Wednesday, we made up ball games and in gym we are working on jumping and rolling. We have also now had two very successful swimming lessons at Moss Side and look forward to becoming even better swimmers during Year 4.
